If Adam Lambert Fails to Win American Idol, Is America Homophobic?

By • on May 8, 2009

So now we’re down to three finalists on American Idol. But as far as I’m concerned, there has only been one realistic contender this season: Adam Lambert. Mind you, I’m not a rabid American Idol fan. I find the product-placement pseudo-commercials that are de regueur at the top of each episode cheesier than an Amsterdam grocery. Then again, those diversions are part of the show’s relentlessly toothy, upbeat, shamelessly hyper-promotional tone, which reached an apogee last night with Paula Abdul’s “performance” of “I’m Just Here for the Music.” She’s just there for the publicity, what with keeping the stage darker than an Amsterdam porn palace and cameras never focused on Abdul’s face. As for whether Abdul lip-synched or not, I’ll let the more impassioned AI devotees debate that to death.

That’s because I’m just here for Adam Lambert. Very rarely does a talent come along with a voice as perfectly pitched or as nimble as his, capable of tones of musical theater (he’s done plenty of that) as well as pop, rock and soul. Then there’s Lambert’s distinctive persona, one of the most self-actualized in AI history. No, I don’t see a Susan Boyle-esque makeover for him. He’s the real deal and he knows it. We know it. The world knows it. All the matters now is whether enough American Idol callers and texters know it to ensure Lambert the votes to win.

It’s an open question because the fascination with Lambert’s talent is in danger of being eclipsed by the fascination with his sexual orientation. Certainly Lambert has played the enabler: Instead of scaling back his penchant for eyeliner or permanently setting his trademark asymmetrical haircut into the more conservative (some say flattering) up-do he has presented at various performances, he has styled himself as himself, the anti-Clay Aiken. When photographs of Lambert kissing a man or donning drag surfaced on the Internet, he was proud, if not explicitly out. He said, “I have nothing to hide. I am who I am.” All of America should be proud.

But such honesty, however coy, has caused many writers to consider the implications of Lambert either winning or losing AI. On April 10, for example, a New York Times headline called it American Idol’s Big Tease. That story ran two days after the Huffington Post’s Jason Linkins published a rant about a staggeringly snarky Bill O’Reilly segment on the singer. Such kleig lights on Lambert’s sexuality encouraged other outlets, such as ABCNews.com and the New York Daily News, to play the role of dutiful parrot and squawk exuberantly on the same subject. (One exception: Mark Blankenship’s ever-fine The Critical Condition, which this week stuck to the substance of the competition, not the, er, cream.)

If Adam doesn’t win, I will feel sorry to the Idol winner. Because everyone knows that Adam should win and deserves to win. He has worked hard for it and deserves the title. For me Adam is the American Idol because he is honest and strives for excellence. America should reward people like him who are determined to reach a goal. Anyway, win or lose, he will be an international star. But I do hope he wins. If not, HE IS THE WORLD IDOL anyway.

  • SHELLEY

Adam Lambert Fans!!! Dont Vote for Adam Lambert. I am the hugest Adam fan and
I say this for a few reasons. First of all we all know that Adam is the greatest thing to ever grace American Idol Stage and is leaps and bounds above the rest. I think that if he wins American idol he will be forced to water down his image for the sake of the millions of families with children who watch American Idol and for the titles sake. Lets not forget that Amercian Idol a family show. Adam lambert is a rocker and has said himselthat he has had to tone it down for the show. I think that he has received the fan base that he needs to go and show us what he is really made of. so far he has received criticism for nailpolish, makeup, and kissing men. SO FREAKIN WHAT. The guy is amazing and I am sure that if he was with a true rock label he will
amaze us over and beyond. We , THE FANS, are actually in a way punishing him for trying to have him crowned and then be reminded every 10 minutes that he has to uphold some level of purity for the shows sake. Adam is wild, eccentric, and amazing and needs a label that will let him be free to do whatever he wants with his image. Be smart fans and DONT VOTE FOR ADAM. Leave the good guy , pure, title to Danny or Kris and let Adam go off and do his own thing. We want all of Adam and are looking forward to more costumes, makeup and provocative dancing from him and we love it ALL. FANS Everywhere, DONT VOTE FOR ADAM and trap him in the whole American Idol brand. Its like mixing KISS with Barry Manilow. Why put him with past American Idol Winners. Let him do what he wants and wow us even More. Be smart guys. DONT LET ADAM WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Adam Fan

If Adam doesn’t win, it would be a mistake to automatically attribute it to homophobia. There is the possibility that people like the singing ability of another contestant more than Adam’s. Adam has not said anything about his sexuality and it is no one’s business but his and should not even be up for discussion. It doesn’t matter whether he wins or not, because he is an exceptionally talented individual. American Idol has given him the opportunity to display that talent to the world and there are certainly producers anxiously awaiting the opportunity to sign him to a contract.

  • Pam Johnson

I think the question should be whether Adam would like to win AI, and the answer is that of course he would. The earlier post about not voting for him to “protect” him from something is misguided. I want him to win and I’m a conservative grandmother. The guy rocks.

  • Wilna1877

Pam Johnson – I agree with you. I think Adam wants to win the competition and is giving it his all. We as fans should support him.

  • Paul T

I’m in my mid-fifties and not an “Idol-file.” Yet I find myself tuning in each night just to see this guy with the voice and talent that won’t quit! When I watch his performances his sexual orientation never enters my mind. The thing that this extremely talented kid has going for him is knowing how to be the consumate entertainer. It is his theatrical experience that enables him to bring to life whatever he chooses to sing. He dresses the part for whatever genre thrown at him, puts on the “character” of the song, and sells it. He has a gift that can sustain a career for decades. He reminds me of Streisand in that ability.

  • Susan L

America is homophobic. One doesn’t need the question of Adam Lambert’s sexuality answered to know that! I think we’re coming along, it’s just to slow in my opinion.

Having gay people in one’s community is a wonderful thing. Like all forms of diversity, it enriches the lives of those around them. If Adam’s sexual orientation is influencing who he is as an artist (and of course, such an important piece of one’s identity would do so), then those of us who love his performances, love that part of him.

I will vote until I am cut off and not hold back. Why? Because it is clear that Adam wants the win–he’s not holding anything back. And, at this point, I want whatever he wants out of this experience.

Adam, I wish you nothing but the greatest success and offer you my unconditional support for who you are!!!!!!!!!

  • Danielle

I love Adam and think he deserves to win much more than the 2 other guys who are left. I think people need to focus more on the fact that its a singing competition. But at the same time, I agree that if he does win he is locked into the American Idol contract that may make him downplay himself a bit. I would love to see him in the final 2, and even if he doesnt technically win with the votes, he has still won. The guy has some talent =)

  • Jana

Adam has a beautiful voice. I agree with Adam fan, it would be a mistake to automatically assume it was because of his sexuality. His Mad World performance was outstanding with the exception of his breathing… constantly throughout the live song as well as his studio recording. He does it so much that it irritated me to the point I couldn’t listen to it anymore. He certainly has the stage presence, charisma and talent to go far on Broadway… but he will need training to get him from breathing into the microphone before making it big in the music industry.

  • Mariyas

True ADAM’s fans please don’t be deceived by a couple of impostors posting here not to vote for ADAM. Those who sow division and confusion have no love in their heart. What they have is ENVY. And we know who they serve and worship.
ADAM gives winning performances week after week. He wants to win. Simon already emphasized it’s all about winning. AI would be foolish to put ADAM in a box after he has already shown the world how far he can go.
AMERICA will not be forgiven if it gets it all WRONG. ADAM has millions of international fans. ADAM has changed people’s lives world wide. PLEASE don’t get it wrong. ADAM is The WORLD’S IDOL and a LEGEND in the making.

  • iloveadam2much

I will continue to vote for Adam because that’s what he wants. He wants to win and is working hard for it. He knows all the implications and all that comes with winning Idol and he still wants to win. I trust him and I know he knows what he’s doing and what’s best for him. He has delivered the most amazing, heart-felt, fun, sexy performances ever on that show. And he is the best performer on AI- not only this season, but all of them. HE DESERVES TO WIN.
    ADAM HAS MY VOTES!

  • Winnie

Jana-I also noticed his breathing, but I do wonder about it. As I type this, I’m listening to his astounding ‘Come to Me, Bend to Me’ performance from Brigadoon on You Tube. No breathing problems there, and it is a live performance. Have you listened to it? It is one of the most beautiful performances I have ever heard. I don’t know what the explanation is for Mad World, but it hardly matters to me. Adam is a bright light in these dark times. I’m thankful for each and every one of his performances, and will miss them sorely when AI ends.

  • mariadan

We must VOTE from the first until the last second. On another place on this website (MyIdol/AdamLambert) people were saying they were instructed in the churches to vote for Danny. This is why Danny always has a very close amount of votes compared to Adam. YES……AMERICA IS HOMOPHOBIC.

People must understand this is not a Kissing/Religious contest. They must vote the person that can make the best IDOL (the whole package).

ADAM WANTS TO WIN THIS COMPETITION, WE MUST HELP HIM.

  • Paul Westington

This guy is in a league all his own. He is by far the most talented contestant American Idol has ever seen. Sure there has been some great singers from the past – Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson & Kelly Clarkson. But none of them have the entire package of vocal and performance ability. Lambert does not apologize for who he is and nor should he. I find it shameful that the mainstream press focus is on his orientation and not his vocal ability. The think the thing I dislike most about American Idol is it becomes a “whose got the best story” contest rather than who is the most talented. Lambert’s talent is undeniable. Is America homophobic, obviously yes it is. Otherwise discussing his orientation would elicit nothing but a great big yawn.

I will vote for Adam Lambert because he is vocally gifted and head and shoulders above the other two. The other two contestants are what American Idol usually churns out. The average, mainstream singer you hear on the radio. I am voting for above average this time.

TO ALL ADAM FANS PLEASE DISREGARD ANY POSTS THAT SAY ADAM SHOULD NOT WIN. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE. Vote Vote vote for him.

The only thing this will accomplish is Adam having less pull to do the kind of record he wants and for us to have to wait for the record to be released. The winner’s record is released first not the runner up.

Adam really wants to win and so lets make this happen for him.

Here’s a quote from from Adam from The Jeff and Jer Show Radio Interview 5-8-09

“If I were to win, it would definitely be a validation of everything I have worked for, my whole life, I have been trying to entertain people. Getting to be on this platform and being able to entertain this many people all at once… this is the ultimate prize. This is what I’ve wanted for my whole life so it will be a crowning achievement and it will be pretty overwhelming.”

Adam fans to please remember to VOTE FOR ADAM TUESDAY NIGHT AND NO SPLIT VOTING.

  • Patrice

I know why Adam landed in the bottom 3 – because I pulled my usual block voting for Adam over to help Allison, feeling that Adam would have no trouble staying on top. I know plenty of other people who did this. Adam should win, and the Shelley woman who is saying not to is either a “Gokey Plant” as some people are calling her, or she is simply misguided. She doesn’t know that the contracts they sign all have the winner releasing their album first, and the others are also tied to their contracts with control over their albums the same as the winner. Basically, Adam is the most talented. As for those who say Adam is getting more publicity, whatever. If you look at the exposure everyone got in the early days before Hollywood, Danny got by far the most. I barely ever heard about Adam or Kris. Adam and Kris have earned it. Danny is just okay. Allison unfortunately got robbed, but she is set for life anyway – as will Adam be whether he wins this contest or not. I’ve never seen another American Idol get international attention like he does.

  • Jaycee

Adam is in a league of his own compared with Danny and Kris…..a league called professional entertainers…..which should have excluded him from competing in AI. Years of off-Broadway singing and acting put the other contestants at an unfair disadvantage. Adams sounds great because he has been singing professionally for years. It’s quite obvious he is very comfortable on stage…..that’s what he does every night when he works.

Adam winning AI will be anti-climatic…..like, the suprise would be if he lost. However, the win won’t be representative of a Kelly, Carrie, Jordan, Fantasia, Ruben, Taylor, or David win because they were basically obscure diamonds in the rough who competed against others like themselves to win the title. MJ Blige, Beyonce, T Swift, J Mayer, N Jonas, and K West would win hands down if thsy competed on AI.

  • Winnie

Jaycee- Playing in the Little Leagues does not make someone a Major League baseball player. Adam has spoken about what a struggle it is to make it as a professional artist in the music industry. He has had his stints of clerking in retail stores between gigs just to make ends meet. I cannot imagine the difficulty of holding on to his dream in the face of rejection and financial insecurity. And as far as his experience giving him an unfair advantage over the others-what have they been doing the last 10 years to develop their art while Adam has been busting his butt working at it. Yes, Adam does have an advantage-it’s called single minded determination and devotion to his craft.

  • Lynn

please everyone vote hard for Adam this Tuesday, we need to vote 4 hours. I cannot bear to see him lose! I will die!

  • Talitha

you’re wrong, SHELLEY. If he is already in the finale, it’s better off win. The winner and the runner-up will experience the same thing about contracts and management and all that, except the winner will have more, what do you call, pride? so it’s better off win. VOTE FOR ADAM!

  • loraine

I think for Adam not to win American Idol would be an in justice to him and all of the viewers texting in to this show take nothing from chris cause i love him but adam has proven without a shadow of a doubt he is american Idol 2009 and beyond if he does not win Adam knows he is a winner how ever the results turn out but one thing i can say for Idol this is the only year they have been bang on target with these singers cause most of the time american voters send home the best singers, thank god for Adam, love the man for his talent not his lifestyle. love u adam

  • MAC

I’m sick, I’ll never watch AI again!

  • wanted to comment

just wanted to comment. for those of you who claim that adam’s presumed sexual orientation was not a factor in this outcome are surely mis-guided. I am a 39 year old gay man so I can speak from experience. Of course no-one on this site (or at least very few) will readily admit it in public forum, but in the privacy of their living room and wiht phone in hand…”no offense/no foul”. I have rarely experienced out right prejiduced, but I DO experience it in may subtle ways, every SINGLE day as I am sure Adam does. Don’t presume to know unless you have walked a mile in someone elses shoes. I am sure Adam was prepared for this…it loooks as if he was raised by insightful parents who knew that because he was different …he would have to work that much harder than the next guy. I am sure he has a tough skin and was compeltely shocked by the outcome…it something we experence all the time. So…to those that claim that this was not a factor….then you just don’t get it. sorry.

  • http://- Rina

I am so, so disappointed that Adam didn’t win. I’m sure, to many, in our hearts,’You are still our Idol.’ We will look forward to your new albums shortly. Keep going….you don’t need to be an AI to be a Superstar!! You are a Legend of the Century!!

  • http://- RY

To our Dear Adam….This is just the beginning of greater things. A bright future is ahead of you…and the sky is the limit!!!

  • AdamIsTheIdolGod

America is so fucking homophobic so they choose to vote for a “wholesome/christian/boynextdoor” rather than the “dark/sexual/rocker/wild Idol to represent their “picket fence” way of life. It's time to change America everybody is equal whether they are gay/different colour or creed. We're living in a more opened society now so it's time to open your insecure door that you hide yourself.

  • ann

So what does this mean, now??? Everytime a homosexual person loses in a competition, it's because he/she is gay? Come on!! Nothing is so black and white as that. The show boils down to a matter of opinion. Obviously, the winning opinion was that Adam Lambert lost. Let's don't start making everything about sexuality. If that was the case, why bother having the competition in the first place?

  • zoom99

Short answer YES. But really how can all of America be homophobic? They can't be, and the reasons are far too complex. BUT, yes, it's possible that some people that are uncomfortable with Adam's dress, sexuality, appearance etc to cause the final votes to end up a little out of Adam's favor. Meaning he'd lose. OReilly had a segment that really stirred up the issue. He's such an ASS. He pretends to be the older, confused person asking if it's possible for Adam to lose due to being gay. But he knows he's just stirring controversy to earn money. Also in the deep south, there tends to be this attitude about power texting. With AT&T giving the arkansas people a few thousand free phones and educating them on the finer points of power voting, and then having that news spread via radio programs, it created a storm of people that voted for Kris. Funny thing is Kris himself mentioned that he hoped people wouldn't vote for religion or sexuality. But what that means, is he actually knows it goes on.

That's why he brought it up. That said, conservatives, usually from that area, also tend to be aligned with the bible belt. Now, I know I'm reaching some. But it's also some what true. These people are the same ones that voted for Taylor Hicks. Notice how they always vote for a southerner.

Then some of the Gokey fans voted for Kris just because they didn't approve of Adam's sexuality. And Kris again, mentioned it in a very round about way. So YES. If we can have people doing this, then it's certainly possible that Adam lost for his sexuality. But imagine this. What if Adam didn't wear makeup, had a girl friend, and sang in churches and was from Arkansas? But he sounded exactly like Adam does now. Guess what? They bulk of power voters in arkansas would have voted for Adam instead. And Adam would have won. Oh well.

  • sherry

If the ameicans idol fans were gay phobic Adam would not have made it to the last two standing. He lost because votes were tansfered from chunky Danny and I think some people in kris's fan group did have some tech that allowed extented voteing time. Possibillity of several hours. that right there would put the votes up and over. It is just wrong to think americans are that narrow minded.

  • sherry

I just saw photos of adam tounge kissing a girl/ then several of him with danielle stori.so why not put those out there?
I hope Adam and fergie will do a project /would be so hot hot hot.
Keith Urban had to carry poor kris. Kris struggles with everthing he sings.
It is embarassing for kris and the show.
And What it says about america's take on talent.
    Makes us like hicks.
