Master Mind: Fox helps athletes conquer mental aspect

Dr. Travis Fox used to be a professional golfer, but as he puts it he became a “head case” on the course.

“Unlike other psychologists who start out as doctors, I was a golfer who became a doctor,” Fox said. “I didn’t start out to help other people. My main focus was that I wanted to help me.”

Fox did help himself improve his game, and as he did, he found out there were a lot of golfers out there who needed his help.

“As I got into fixing me, I found out I got a lot of joy helping other people improve their games,” Fox said.

He doesn’t show people how to swing a golf club or even line up a putt. What he does is focus on the toughest part of the game — the mental aspect.

“I’d say golf is 99.9 percent mental. So, what we do is help people free themselves from their own minds,” Fox said. “When you’re in the zone out there on the golf course, you’re not thinking, and you’re play improves. I’ve coached professionals and amateurs, and the feedback is immediate. My amateurs, they’ll notice three to five strokes off their game in about a month’s time. Professionals, it’s little things, because they already know how to play the game very well.”

Fox, a sports psychologist and hypnotherapist as well as a lecturer and TV personality, has 20 years of experience and has hosted more than 6,400 events and more than 500 corporate/personal workshops across the country.

His video/compact disc series entitled “How to Beat the Bogey Man™” has sold thousands of copies nationwide, and his new book “Get Psyched … Secrets to Lower Golf Scores™” will be landing on bookshelves on June 10.

“We process step by step what happens when you’re on the course and what happens in your conscious and unconscious mind. We show you how to get in the zone on command. The zone’s always there, you just have to tap into it,” Fox said.

He signed a one-year contract back in February to join the “Speaking of Golf” radio show with Tom Horan.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” Fox said. “Tom and the entire cast have been great. What I love about it is that the show isn’t just about golf. We talk about a variety of sports and also life in general.”

The show airs on WWNC (570 AM) from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday mornings.

“We are constantly challenging our listeners, and we have a lot of fun,” Fox said.

Although he’s more into “coaching” players now, he hasn’t put away his clubs for good.

“I still play, and I’m a scratch golfer. I actually have a desire to try to make it back on the Tour…not to show off or anything like that, but just to show that it can be done,” Fox said. “I was playing in Georgia just a few weeks ago with some friends, and I shot 2-over.”
