The Uninvited is a more family-friendly remake of the R-rated Korean horror film Janghwa, Hongryeon or A Tale of Two Sisters. As such, it’s not nearly as scary or atmospheric but much like other Asian horror movie remakes (yes, I know Ringu and Ju-on are Japanese, but bear with me), the plot is easier to follow. At the same time, these scare-fests are defanged for US audiences; perhaps since I’d seen the original, I knew what the big twist was, or maybe it’s just wayyyy more obvious.
When we first meet Anna, played by Lemony Snicket’s Emily Browning, she’s trying to unravel a recurring nightmare with help from a friendly shrink who works at the institution she’s been in for for almost a year. Said friendly shrink decides it’s time for her to go out into the real world and “finish what you’ve started.” …
