According the fast, brief, and usually reliable Twitter feed of Production Weekly, director Mike Newell (“Donnie Brasco”, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”) is in talks to direct Jerry Bruckheimer’s adaptation of “The Lone Ranger” with the script by Terry Rossio & Ted Elliott (who I really like as screenwriters because I think they write fun movies and have succeeded with unlikely franchises like “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “National Treasure”). Johnny Depp is also on board to star as the Ranger’s sidekick, Tonto.
While Depp and Newell previously collaborated on “Brasco”, I’m indifferent to Newell. I think he’s a good, capable director, but he’s a journeyman and doesn’t really leave his mark anywhere and that’s somewhat disheartening because I’d prefer the big budgets to land in the …
